What We Are Working on

  • News Cards block and WSU News bug: By updating (or rather, consolidating) the plugins for News categories, we’ve encountered a bug. Or by updating the plugins, we could have fixed a bug that we didn’t know about. Either way, we are still working on fixing the News Cards block when it pulls press releases, news articles, and posts from WSU News.
  • Preview of the new News website: We saw a preview of the new News website. It will be a consolidation of our current Insider News and Washington State magazine websites, merging timely news with evergreen stories. Inside WSU is a nod towards our current Insider. There are a few new categories: Research Impact, Connecting Communities, Coug Experience, and University Operations. Announcements is adding an option for Event Announcements, since most announcements are about events, plus search and filtering capabilities.

Glitch List

  • People List block and alt text: This is a known bug. The People list block is not rendering the alt text provided in the People Directory.

Submit a web support ticket to Report a Bug/Issue if you find a glitch.

Byte Size Tutorial

  • How alt text and captions work together: The top image on this page, featuring Ben Stiller as Zoolander, has a very brief alt text (Ben Stiller as Zoolander). The “caption” provides additional information for everyone. While the alt text tends to serve people using assistive devices or when the image is missing, the caption is available to everyone, with or without an assistive device. For this image, the caption provides details that everyone should receive: the signature Blue Steel look. Including this information in the alt text serves only one set of users, not everyone. Looking at the surrounding content, making this information, the signature Blue Steel look, is something you want available to everyone. This is an excellent example of alt text and caption working together to provide everyone with the right amount of information.
